Origins of the Indian Gooseberry
The Indian gooseberry (Phyllanthus emblica) is native to India and Nepal and is harvested in the fall. Because it is more fibrous than most fruits and has a bitter-sour taste, it is typically not served raw but often pickled with salt, oil, and spices, particularly in southern India. Phyllanthus emblica is a primary medicinal ingredient in Ayurveda, a traditional Hindu system of medicine originating thousands of years ago that is based on the idea of achieving equilibrium among mind, body, spirit, and environment.
All parts of the Indian gooseberry plant— fruit, seed, leaves, root, bark, and flowers— are used in various Ayurvedic herbal preparations. In Ayurveda, the fruit alone is considered a rasayana, or a balancer of fire elements in the body, which means that it governs all heat, metabolism, and transformation in the mind and body, including digestion and sensory perception.
Capros® is obtained from premium-quality fruits using a patented water-based process. Fruits employed in the production of Capros® are selected, harvested, and processed according to strict criteria for producing a consistently high-quality product. This process yields a product that is distinctly different in color, activity, composition, aqueous stability, and consistency of composition than any other commercially available product derived from Phyllanthus emblica.
